Human Resource Audits and Compliance

Human Resource (HR) audits are a great way to ensure your organization is in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. They are also an effective way for reviewing policies, procedures, employment practices, and determining if these practices are aligned with the organization’s culture. Similar to health exams, a comprehensive audit can help assess an organization’s weaknesses or vulnerabilities, such as outdated job descriptions, compensation practices and performance management philosophies, record retention, and on-boarding and off-boarding processes.

HR audits can be performed in-house, however, there are major advantages to using an outside firm. An outside consulting firm will be able to conduct an objective and un-biased audit of current practices, policies and procedures as well as offer recommendations and best practices. Additionally, an impartial party will be able to identify areas of concerns that those closely involved in the day to day practices may not be able to see. A final benefit is the time in-house resources will save by being able to continue to focus on other important priorities and responsibilities by outsourcing the audit to an outside consultant. Outside consultants are also able to assist with implementing many of the recommendations, which is another time and resource savings!

The scope of the audit can be broad or narrowly focused and concentrate on the areas where the organization is most concerned. Either way, periodic audits are one way companies can make sure they remain current with required posters, handbooks, and compliant with federal and state employment laws. They can also make sure the policies and procedures you have in place are helping your organization continue to thrive and remain healthy.
